Five Ways to Keep Swimmers Through Middle School

Middle school is when many swimmers leave the sport. School gets busier, other activities compete for time and kids become more aware of where they fit in.

Five ways to help them stay

  1. 01Listen to them. Ask swimmers what they enjoy and what they would change.
  2. 02Make it social. Team nights, relays and meet breakfasts can matter as much as practice.
  3. 03Celebrate progress. Recognize effort, better technique, consistency and personal bests.
  4. 04Offer flexible pathways. Not every swimmer needs the same level of commitment at age 12.
  5. 05Communicate with parents. Help them understand that development takes time.

The goal is not to make every middle schooler a senior swimmer overnight. It is to create an environment where they feel known, supported and excited to return.
